The EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC has been the foundational EU regulation for machinery safety since 2009. It mandates CE marking, Declaration of Conformity, and a technical file demonstrating compliance with Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR). The Directive is being replaced by the Machinery Regulation 2023/1230, effective January 2027. The new Regulation expands scope to cover AI-enabled machinery, machine learning components, industrial cybersecurity (IEC 62443 compliance), and digital documentation. For any company exporting machinery to the EU market, the 2027 transition affects technical file requirements, conformity assessment procedures, and post-market obligations.
